Womanbirth
Jan Luckingham Fable

"My work as a psychotherapist as well as my personal experience has brought home to me how much courage is necessary for women to break out of the roles to which family, church and society has assigned them."

Woman
is born to her Self
in stillness.
She must cease her serving
cease the doing,
the pleasing and obeying others.
For it's only in the quiet that she can hear her voice.

Woman
is born to her Self
in darkness.
She must embrace her loneliness and fear
as she gropes blindly along the path into herself.
Guilt is the price of her journey;
Courage is a gift from the women who have gone ahead.

Woman
is born to her Self
in sadness and depression.
She must cleanse her soul of others' expectations, rules,
bear witness to her anguish,
honor the recognition of her pain.
She must raise her warrior voice in a resounding "NO".

Woman
is born to her Self.

She nurtures the wounded orphaned child within her
comforting it in its shame and terror.
She is grounded in an ancient sense of Being.
Her life reflects her deepest values.
Knowing, Strength, and Passion are the heritage of her birth.
